My Story
I grew up in a bustling Italian-Catholic suburb of Detroit, where I quickly learned the art of resilience, mostly from being the only sister squeezed between three brothers. (Imagine the middle seat on a Spirit Airlines flight…without even the complimentary peanuts.)
From an early age, I was a dreamer with a flair for storytelling. One day I was Maria Von Trapp belting “The hills are alive!” in the backyard, the next I was penning stories about bold heroines who changed the world. Then came real life. My parents divorced at a time when divorce was practically unheard of, and the dreamer in me was forced to share space with a pragmatist determined not to repeat history. (Spoiler alert: The divorce part was repeated.)
That determination carried me into a 33-year career in financial services, an MBA in hand, and two incredible kids I raised as a single mom, earning recognition along the way, including the President’s Volunteer Service Award under Barack Obama. Along the way, I found my life partner, my second husband. (My first husband was “practice.”)
At 62, I traded boardrooms for a supposed retirement filled with travel, gardening, and the ultimate symbol of accomplishment: an alphabetized spice rack. But even a perfectly lined-up row of cumin and coriander, and a backyard overflowing with tomatoes, basil, and zucchini, couldn’t quiet the nagging question:
Is this it?
The Turning Point
Life wasted no time in giving me an answer. My husband’s battle with a rare leukemia became a wake-up call: a crash course in resilience, faith, and learning to live with intention.
Alongside hospital visits and test results, I became a full-time student of life itself, diving into research on aging, retirement, un-retirement, productive longevity, well-being, and happiness. My not-so-secret goal? To become a purposeful centenarian. (Why just blow out 100 candles when you can do it with style and purpose?)
Today, with my husband in remission and my mornings rooted in meditation, gratitude, movement, and learning, I’m writing my Third Act—not as a chapter of retirement, but as a chance to reimagine what comes next.
It’s the Third Act you’re writing right now.
No Roles. No Rules. Just You.
